The Gyr Falcon breeds in all parts of Iceland but is commonest in the north. Their nests are in cliffs where they lay their eggs in early april. The young Falcons leave the nest and their parents in august. The size of the stock is dependant on the Ptarmigan it's favourite prey but is estimated at 1000-2000 birds with 250-350 nesting pairs. It's a magnificent bird and through the centuries they have been exported in great numbers up to 100-200 per year around 1750. The Falcon is most noticeable in autumn and is a great favourite with bird-watchers.
