The Golden Plover is considered to be the harbinger of spring when they arrive in late mars. It's a beautiful bird with a sweet voice and has become a favourite with Icelanders. Around 300.000 pairs breed in the country and it's very common in all lowland areas especially among heather and where there is plenty of vegetation. It's easy to spot them both flying and running on the ground as their distinctive colours make them stand out among other waders.
