The Harbour porpoise is common along Iceland's coasts. This small species is most often seen solitarily, or in small family groups. This whale has been hunted incidentally by fishermen in earlier times but the ones seen on the market today are all accidentally caught in fishing nets. The pourpoises are slow swimmers and usually don't dive for as long or deep as many other cetaceans. They are often seen in fjords and bays often very close to shore, as well as to boats that are moving slowly.
