Ice caves are among the most beautiful and extraordinary things I have seen. They are about the most silent and peaceful places on this earth except of course when the glacier is cracking. There are many in this country and they are always forming and being destroyed. In the summer the glaciers melt and water drains through the ice sometimes making holes through the ice cap. The water flows under the glacier and into rivers closer to the edge of the glacier melting away the ice and forming a cave that can extend hundreds of metres into the ice. During winter the melting and flow of water decreases or stops completely. That's when the ice caves are accessible.

I have had the good fortune to be able to have a look at quite a few of them. Each new one is different from the last and here we'll visit two. The first one was in the southwest of Vatnajokull and was destroyed shortly after I took these pictures. Sadly this wonderful ice cave was only seen and enjoyed by a handful of us as it had been discovered a couple of weeks earlier These pictures don't do it justice but they'll give an idea of the world inside glaciers. The other is from the north of Vatnajokull and will probably stay intact fore some time as it's glacier isn't expected to move much for a while
I hope you enjoy the show |
