The rivers in The East Fjords are not among the biggest in the country. There are big glacier rivers flowing from Vatnajokull glacier through Hérad, the area around Egilsstadir, but the rivers in the fjords are usually much smaller. From each valley flows a river and many smaller ones join it on the way to the sea in the bottom of the fjord. Some of the rivers that flow down the sides of the mountains are very beautiful where they are more of a constant waterfall than a river. One of the highest waterfalls in the country is Hengifoss 118 m. high across Lake Lögurinn from Hallormstadur southwest of Egilsstadir.
