Valleys can be found throughout the highlands in countless variations. The south highlands have the biggest share as they are almost only mountains and valleys. In the north many huge valleys cut into the higher plateau some up to 50 km. In the east the valleys are deep and often narrow surrounded by huge jagged mountains. The glaciers even have valleys mostly at their edges and some quite big. Valleys with geothermal activity are always very interesting and are often called Hveradalur, Hver meaning hot spring and dalur is valley.
