Huge mountain ridges both long and wide categorise North Iceland. They are mainly between the fjords and lie from north to south. The mountains are usually over 1000 metres high and the highest go to 1600 metres. The mountain ranges are rough and only a few farms can be found within them. The mountains cover most of the peninsulas and rise steeply up from the sea with little lowland along the coast. There are deep valleys in the mountains and they have come alive with myth and folklore. The biggest mountain range, Trollaskagi, draws it's name from these stories as it is the kingdom of Trolls.
