The coast of North Iceland has long peninsulas and huge fjords. The shoreline is both long beaches and sheer mountains rising from the sea. Smaller fjords cut into the mountainous peninsulas. Some have fishing towns, others isolated and difficult to reach. Areas along the coast that used to have farms have now been deserted because of their inaccessibility and there are no roads there. These places are now getting popular for hikes some of which take several days. Just as good for enjoying the outdoors and much more accessible are the long sandy beaches of the huge bays that shouldn't be overlooked when travelling in the area.
