The Northeast doesn't have any glaciers but there is intense geothermal activity and quite a few active volcanoes. The best known spot is northeast of Lake Myvatn. There is a yellow mountain, Mt. Námafjall, coloured by the heat and chemicals in the hot ground. Steam is oozing from the ground in many places and boiling water and mud can be found in many holes in the area. Around 1975 an eruption that lasted many years took place halting the operation of the newly built geothermal powerplant until it finally stopped in 1984.
