Of all the lakes in this part of the country Lake Myvatn, the fourth biggest lake in Iceland, is the most famous. More species of duck are supposed to breed by the lake than anywhere in the world. It also has fantastic lava formations, intense geothermal activity and excellent tourist facilities. There are many other lakes in this part of the country some of them offering good trout fishing. Permits are usually available and cheap.
