Lakes are abundant in South Iceland. There are many rivers flowing through the flatlands and lakes, big and small, have formed in many places. Lake Thingvallavatn is the biggest in the country almost 84 square kilometres. There is great diversity from big reservoirs to small bright green ponds that have formed in old craters. The fishing is quite good in many of the lakes and fishing permits are often cheap and available. There is rich bird life in these parts and most of the lakes offer good opportunities for bird watching.
