There is plenty of mountains in South Iceland even though a big part of the area is flat. The flatlands are surrounded with mountains and to the eastern part is very mountainous country topped with glaciers. Mt. Hekla, an active volcano, and one of the best known mountains in Iceland watches over the area in from northeast of the plains ready to send it's greetings in the form of ash. It last erupted in 1990 and is one of those volcanoes that can go off any time. Mt. Katla under the ice cap of Myrdalsjökull glacier is another sleeper that is expected to erupt some time soon, maybe. Lots of mountains to see and of all kinds and shapes in this area.
