Heymaey the biggest of The Westmann Islands has a population of almost 5000. In 1973 an eruption started on the island on the edge of the town. Before it stopped it had put some 300 houses under lava and made a new mountain, the dark one in the picture. The dark part of the island is the new lava.		Close window
