Almost all the towns around Iceland are on the coast except for South Iceland. The majority of the towns in this area are inland. The reason is simple, there are very few harbours on the south coast. The towns are service centres in this biggest agricultural area of the land. Some of the smaller ones are built around geothermal fields of which there are many in the region. Most of the towns have extensive tourist services and due to the diversity of the area there are many possibilities to choose from including some of the country's major tourist attractions.
