The mountains along the edge of Vatnajökull somehow seem smaller than they are because of the presence of the glacier behind them. The fact is that they are usually somewhere between 1000 and 15000 metres high. These are real mountains carved out by the brute force of the glaciers in the past. The glaciers are still at it, although on a lesser scale, as they flow between the mountains always bringing bits and pieces of rock with them on their slow but unstoppable crawl to the lowlands beneath. There are some roads up to these mountains, that are worth exploring for tourists equipped with the right vehicle.
