The Southeast is the region of the glacial waters. They come from Vatnajökull and as there is such a short distance to the sea and the land is quite flat they don't form few huge rivers as is the case north of the glacier. However, some of them are already huge where they emerge from the edges of the glaciers and these rivers have proved the worst obstacles for travellers through these past up to the seventies when finally bridges were built across the last rivers. There are many magnificent canyons and waterfalls in the region.
