Southwest Iceland covers the Reykjanes peninsula, Reykjavik and a small area north and east of the city, including Mt. Esja, a huge mountain across the fjord from Reykjavik and the pride of the people in Reykjavik. More than half of the country's population lives in this area, mostly Reykjavik and the surrounding towns. The peninsula is covered with lava and is quite barren and strangely enough there are no rivers there unlike the rest of the country. There are however many places of interest and perhaps the strong geothermal activity that characterises the area is at the top af the list.
