Across the bay from Reykjavik is Mt. Esja, a huge mountain 10 by 20 km. It has become popular for hikes and the view over Reykjavik is magnificent from the top. A short distance to the southeast is another mountain cluster Mt. Hengill. It is one of the many hot areas of this country and has a big geothermal powerplant at it's roots. Countless mountains are in the range that goes along Reykjanes peninsula and there are many routes through them both for cars and also hiking trails.
