Perhaps the most noticeable thing in the landscape of Southwest Iceland apart from the mountains is lava. Lava covers a big part of Reykjanes peninsula and there are different types of lava form different times. Some are bare and some are partly covered with moss and other vegetation. The lava has many strange formations and it is surprising how many good hiking trails can be found there. There are also caves some of them enormous in size. The man made lake The Blue Lagoon is on the peninsula not far from Keflavík airport attracting increasing number of visitors every year.
