Fjords in West Iceland are few but quite big. Hvammsfjordur is the biggest not counting the two huge bays either side of Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is just north of the peninsula and shaped like a boot. There are some small fjords on the north coast of the peninsula and in the south of the area are Borgarfjordur and Hvalfjordur. In 1998 a tunnel under Hvalfjord opened and cut about 50 km off Road 1. the road around Iceland.
