The West Fjords, the head of Iceland, are extraordinary. It's a very rough area with lots of big fjords and tall mountains between them. Still even though there isn't much lowland it's surprising and very pleasing to see how green the mountains are during summer. There are many huge sea cliffs with millions of seabirds and some are accessible by road. There are just over 10 fishing towns and most of the long, winding roads between them are bad gravel roads. But in spite of the isolation and often difficult transport the West Fjords are among the most interesting and beautiful areas in Iceland.
