The West Fjords are nothing but mountains. This is the oldest part of the country about 13 million years old and the layers slope downwards to the east. They are mostly made of basalt and some rhyolite. These mountains are made by glaciers that have dug out the walleys and fjords and by the end of the ice age and the glacier melted it left the magnificent mountains of The West Fjords. For people who like rough, unspoiled mountains this is certainly the place to visit.
