There are 11 towns in The West Fjords all of them fishing towns. There are many things to see and surprisingly much to choose from for the travellers visiting this beautiful region. In two places towns have merged to form a bigger, stronger community and in recent years tunnels through the mountains have been dug to improve the difficult transport during the winter. Devastating avalanches destroyed parts of Sudavik and Flateyri in 1995 and 1996 taking the lives of 34 people.
