Slavonian Grebe, Horned Grebe
Slavonian Grebe is the only Grebe in Iceland. It makes a floating nest by lakes and ponds with plentiful organic life. It's a rare bird and is most likely to be found around Lake Myvatn where most of the population breeds. They feed on sticklebacks and small fresh water insects. The Slavonian Grebe population has fallen steadily throughout this century but in recent years their numbers have risen again somewhat. Now an estimated 300 pairs breed here and maybe 50 birds stay in Iceland during winter.
